Pic from the past Mt Eliza

If you ever have the chance to go to the old Royal Children’s Orthopaedic Hospital at Mt Eliza you can only stand back and wonder what it would have been like.

The Hospital of course closed and moved to the “new” Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville in the early sixties. We are now of course watching in amazement at the even newer Hospital in various stages of construction.

One of the things you can still see at the old Hospital is the Nurses Home and the reason we know what the building was used for is because although the sign no longer exists the  marks on the wall can still be clearly seen.

The UNCLE  BOBS CLUB  NURSES  HOME.

A few weeks ago a customer came into our shop  in Drysdale and a conversation started about Uncle Bobs because of various things we were doing.

It turned out Mr Butler was a patient at the Hospital in the early forties, he remembered the Uncle Bobs, Jenny Howard, the Christmas Party days with the pipe bands and his father was even a member of Uncle Bobs.

Would you believe he also had a photo album and on his next visit he brought in the photos of many of the patients nurses and doctors.

Importantly to us he also had a photo of the opening of the UBC Nurses Home.

While the photo is only small you hopefully can make out the sign and the people on the steps with the microphone.

What a great find and we will obviously get a copy for our files.

Bob Willey.
