Bendigo Branch

Our Good Friday total was another record high of $67,676.68, which is an outstanding effort by a small group. A big word of thanks to the people of Bendigo who were so generous. To all the collectors and to every person who helped make this great cause reach this grand total, well done team!

This year our starting figure was up, part of that reason was because we have a new Safeway store in Bendigo, and also because of all the tins we had out throughout the year. Leading up to Good Friday, like always, we had great media coverage from radio’s, newspapers and an interview with Channel 7. Thank you to all the media outlets. Our collectors were down this year but still as you can see made no difference to the result.

In the week leading up to Good Friday in Bendigo we did a tin shake in Hargreaves Mall which made $2,213.502, well done John & Wayne. At Strath Village we collected $1,567.30, thanks to all members who assisted with this collection. Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigades collected at their local supermarkets. All these collections went well, as each group had to get more tins.

Thank you to all members for all the long hard hours they put in leading up to the Appeal on the day and the finishing touch’s afterwards to tie up loose ends. But not forgetting all the work that went in making homemade cakes for the collectors.

This year we had five members in new jobs on the day, well done for a great job, as for the first time this year we had tins plus tubs which made it a little harder.

VALE

Phil Austin

Phil joined the Bendigo Branch of UBC on the 2nd January 1978. Next to her family UBC was a major part of Phil’s life, for well over 26 years. Whatever Phil did for the Club was done with great passion & she loved to help the sick children.

One of her rolls she took on was food coordinator. Phil would have her trusty exercise book with all food items in for each fundraising event that was held. Then she would buy all the food, right down to the smallest items like the salt and pepper.

Phil had a great gift with her sewing and knitting which she would do for the street stall. This was her main input. She would come to each street stall with bags and bags of sewing and knitting goods, but we must not forget her boxes of homemade cooking such as cakes, biscuits, jam, sauce etc.

Phil very often went down to Melbourne to the quarterly meetings with Joy Paynting. One the Melbourne members told me Phil would always bring her knitting to the meetings.

There are so many things she did but she always took time to get some happy shots. I know she had albums full of photos that were very dear to her.

Phil as a person was very modest about all she did for the Club, you could never pay her a compliment, she would say, "stop that, it was nothing".

Phil also held the position of Treasurer and Vic Treasurer.

All this work never went unnoticed because in 1982 along with Harry Austin, Phil was given a Multipurpose Award. Then to follow up this great work in 1991 they both were awarded Life Memberships. Then in 2003 Phil was given the highest Club, a Meritorious Service Award.

Rest In Peace, Phil

Bev & Des

I would like to take some time and send a big thank you to all members for making this raffle such a successful fundraising event. To every member who sold tickets, to the members who brought gift vouchers and to the members who made raffle prizes, to the couple whom banked the money and finally to the three people who help set up and pack up each day. This great work helped us raise $2,382.80, along with a donation tin of $180.45. To finish the great year we had our Christmas tea, which was on the 9th December where we also drew the raffle. Nice meal was had by all and a great way to finish off the year and thanks to Ian Jager who came up from Melbourne to catch up and have tea with us.
